Why protein matters more than you think

Nutrition1 min read

Whether your goal is losing fat, building strength or simply having more steady energy through the day, protein is one of the most useful places to start. It is also one of the most commonly under-eaten.

What protein does for you

  • Keeps you fuller. Meals built around protein tend to hold you longer, which makes a calorie deficit easier to live with.
  • Supports recovery. Training creates the stimulus; protein helps your body respond to it.
  • Protects muscle. Especially important while losing weight, and increasingly important as we get older.

Simple ways to eat more of it

  • Anchor every meal. Decide on the protein first — eggs, Greek yogurt, chicken, fish, tofu, beans — then build the rest of the plate around it.
  • Fix breakfast. It is often the lowest-protein meal of the day, and the easiest one to improve.
  • Keep easy options on hand. Cottage cheese, a protein shake, cooked chicken or boiled eggs make a good choice the convenient one.
  • Spread it out. Several moderate servings through the day usually work better than one very large one.

You do not need a perfect diet to see progress. You need a few good habits you repeat every day.

How much is enough?

The right amount depends on your body size, activity and goals, which is why a personalized plan is more useful than a single rule. A good first step is simply noticing how much you eat now — most people are surprised.

If you have kidney disease or another medical condition that affects your diet, speak with your physician before increasing your protein intake.
